Building the Wingman

A hooded, winged character built from one reference photo, stitch by stitch.

Building the Wingman
  • briefone custom character
  • froma single reference
  • sizepalm sized

Some commissions are a product off the shelf. This one was a character that only existed as a drawing. The client sent a single reference and asked if we could make it real.

Reading the reference

A custom character starts as shapes. We break the reference down into a body, a cap, a mask, and wings, then work out how each part is built and how it attaches.

Colour comes next. We match the art rather than the closest yarn on the shelf, which is what keeps a custom piece looking like the thing it was meant to be.

The parts that make it him

The flat brown cap, the purple mask with its white eyes, the little brown and purple wings. Each is made separately and attached so the proportions stay honest and nothing looks bolted on.

Made to hold

Palm sized on purpose. Big enough to have presence, small enough to sit on a desk or travel in a bag. If you can picture a character, it can be crocheted.

It looks exactly like I pictured it.
